In 1995, seventeen years after our pioneering free-improv trio, Red Square, disbanded, Ian Staples & I once again asked Roger Telford to join us on drums, this time in a new composition-based project we had been developing alongside B So glObal. The tracks that you hear on this album are the result.

We called this new band, Single Field. For live work, we often expanded Single Field to a quartet by co-opting Roger’s saxophonist son, Jake Telford, into the line-up. Four of the tracks on this album feature Jake on soprano sax.

The tracks were recorded at various times and in various locations, but the quartet recordings were all made as part of a test-of-concept for Plastic Head’s Chillum imprint. Plastic Head had asked us for a Single Field album, but, sadly, Chillum folded before we could complete the project.

Single Field ran concurrently with both B So glObal, and with our duo project, which you can hear on the album The Air Is Never Still (see discography opposite). Some of the tunes appear in various iterations and arrangements across all three projects.....
